Dear Parent / Caregiver,
I'm sure you are seeking a quality education for your child, and I feel that we can be part of that process.
The staff at Rosehill Intermediate School are committed to achieving excellence, and feel confident that their emphasis on quality learning and teaching will equip your child well for secondary school.
Rosehill Intermediate School has unique characteristics and strengths that are particularly appropriate for meeting the needs of emerging adolescents. The focus of each programme acknowledges the special nature of the age group we work with.
This special nature includes a wish by students to be:
part of decision making processes
guided by people who know what they are talking about
Children of this age are capable of taking a leading role in their own learning; they are capable of making decisions, and weighing up consequences.
Rosehill Intermediate School also has a strong link with Rosehill College, and we are continuing to forge stronger ties so that there is a smooth transition from one to the other. We share similar views when it comes to expectations of students. Not the least of these is to have students make the most of learning opportunities, and also not impede others in their learning pursuits.
We want a safe and welcoming environment for students so that they will look forward to attending each day. We are particularly firm with any pupils who threaten the safety or enjoyment of others at Rosehill Intermediate.
We have expectations of pupils, and they are quite simply stated,
Get involved in learning opportunities
Encourage others in their educational pursuits
Always do the very best that you can
Yours sincerely
Maria White.

Dear Parents / Guardians
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to welcome pupils, parents/guardians and staff at the commencement of the 2004 school year.
Rosehill Intermediate has a proud record of achievement in academic, cultural and sporting activities and I look forward to seeing this standard continue. I know that the staff, with their wide professional experience and qualifications will greatly assist your child in realising a fulfilling and purposeful year.
While Rosehill Intermediate offers its traditions, its facilities, and its opportunities, it also expects each pupil to develop loyalty, to work with purpose and application and above all, to be courteous to the school community and obedient to the school rules.
Experience has shown that the pupil who puts most into his or her school life will take the most out of it.
Parents are encouraged to purchase stationery before the school year starts, although students are to bring the stationery lists with them on the first day of school, when the teacher will inform them of any other stationery needs. This list will detail the basic requirements needed for your child to commence the academic programme. You are strongly urged to provide your child with the requirements so that he / she may be able to make the right start with the right equipment. Included on the stationery list the school levy and technicraft fees. Over the years these levies have greatly assisted the school with many worthwhile projects and extras.
The Board of Trustees and Parent Teachers Association (PTA) are your representatives. Both welcome your contributions, your suggestions and your participation. The PTA and the Board of Trustees meet every month and the dates are published on the weekly newsletters.
I trust that your child's time at Rosehill Intermediate will be an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
Yours sincerely

INFORMATION FOR NEW PUPILS AND PARENTS
A warm welcome to Rosehill Intermediate School. We hope your child's two years will be most enjoyable and profitable. The following information will familiarise parents and children with some details of school procedures and activities.
We ask that the school office be notified by telephone of any absence, before 8.30am wherever possible. Contact phone number 298-5827. In all cases, a note from parents / caregivers must be sent to the class teacher when the student returns to school.
The Aquatics programme is based on ‘Safety in Water'. We bus the students to Massey Park Swimming Pool in August / September. The Programme is supervised by a professional coach so it has been well designed and is enjoyed by the students. There is a charge based on the cost of the buses.
If a bicycle is ridden to school, a suitable chain and padlock must be used. All bicycle frames have a serial number and it is essential that this is recorded in case of theft, as the school accepts no responsibility. We do not recommend pupils living reasonably close to the school riding bicycles. Students need to provide their own padlocks. We insist that all students riding bicycles to school wear helmets as this is now the law.
The school is well supplied with computers available for student use. All students will receive ‘hands-on' experience with computers as a part of the normal school programme. Over the past two years the school has been developing its computer programmes with a considerable investment being made in computers. A suite of 17 networked systems is operational with each class having allocated time. As well, there is a minimum of 1 system in every classroom.
Internet Safety is taken very seriously and we have maximum safeguards in place. All staff and students must sign an acceptable use agreement before using any computer equipment at school. This is in line with current policies and procedures as agreed by the Ministry of Education.
Every child has the right to a safe, secure and happy environment in which they can learn and teachers can teach. At Rosehill Intermediate, we will not permit behaviour which impinges upon these rights. Our aim is for students to develop self discipline and a growing sense of responsibility for their own actions. All students are expected to treat each other and staff with respect and ensure the safety of people and property. In the event that a student breaches this code, parents will be informed and may be asked to come and discuss the matter. The school maintains a ‘Loss of Privileges List'. Students who persistently offend will not be permitted to enjoy privileges (such as trips out of school, attending visiting shows, representing the school at sport or attending school socials) until they have earned their way off the list. In the unhappy event that the situation is not rectified, the Board of Trustees as the governing body, may become involved to resolve the
problem. Parents will be advised if their child is placed on this list.
All Cheques paid through the school should be made out to Rosehill Intermediate School. Eft-pos is available at the School Office.
It is desirable for students to establish good work habits beyond the classroom and to realise that learning is a shared responsibility between parents, child and school. Homework usually is set regularly for 30 minutes per night, Monday-Thursday, but some teachers prefer a weekly programme. Set homework will generally consist of revision or practice of work covered in class, spelling lists, completion of written assignments etc. Written homework must be neatly presented and signed by the parent or guardian. If your child is unable to do his or her homework, a short note of explanation is required.
Jewellery, other than a watch, is not permitted at school - this, of course, does not apply to medical bracelets. If students have pierced ears, plain silver or gold studs only may be worn, one per ear.
Upon arrival at school the student needs to report to the school office where a 'late note' will be issued, this is then taken by the student to the classroom teacher. A note from parents is also advised to explain the lateness.
We are lucky to have a large, extremely well stocked library. There is a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books and resources to cater for all interests and abilities. In addition we have computers which access Internet based reference material. Students may borrow two books at a time and these may be taken home. The library is open at lunch times and classes are time-tabled to use the library during the school day. Parent help is welcomed to process and maintain our collection. The library also has a bank of six networked computers for student use.
Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds except under exceptional circumstances, and then only on the presentation of a note from a parent. Please ensure your child has an adequate lunch. A Canteen operates at lunchtime for snack food only and children may purchase a variety of items. Students, may purchase lunches by placing an order before school commences. The canteen has a National Heart Foundation Heartbeat Award.
Our school cultural group is a dedicated and committed group. The students work to a high performance level and make regular appearances at school and community functions. Aspects of Tikanga Maori are implemented into class curriculum programmes. A link with Rosehill College has increased development in this area.
If students are to have medication administered while at school, a letter must be received from the prescribing Doctor, stating medication and dosage.
Parents are most welcome in the school. This is best arranged with the teacher concerned before coming. While teachers are in the classroom, their first priority is with students. If you need to contact or see your child or your child's teacher during school hours, we ask you to come to the office first, not directly to classrooms.
All students take part in the physical education programme. A note should be sent in all cases if students are to be excused from physical education, swimming or sports, and should be for a stated period or renewed weekly.
NB: All students are to wear the physical education uniform correctly for this subject.
PE / SPORTS CLOTHING - GIRLS AND BOYS
All students must have correct uniform for PE lessons, interclass and inter-house sport.
School PE T-shirt
School Blue knit shorts
Adequate footwear such as sneakers or tennis type shoes.
Old rugby type jersey for contact sport.
Students who are selected for school representative teams must wear the school PE T-shirt and royal blue shorts.
CAPS: We encourage pupils to wear the school caps. Other hats / caps are not permitted.
A provisional report will be sent to you in March, after about the first eight weeks. This is aimed at letting you know how well pupils have settled at school. Formal written reports on students progress are made during mid June. It forms the basis of an interview for parents shortly after, to discuss with teachers ways and means of assisting with your child's education on a co-operative basis. Parents are welcome at any time to discuss the progress of their children, but please make an appointment through the office so that a suitable time can be arranged.
Provision Report - Early March
1st Written Report - End of Term 2
Oral Report - End of Term 2 (or as required by teacher / parent)
2nd Written Report - Early December
The major fundraising within the school is the school donation which the Board of Trustees ask parents to pay at the beginning of the school year. This money is used to provide additional Library books, physical education sports equipment, printed classroom material etc. A receipt will be issued. The donation for 2007 is $80.00 per student or $100.00 per family.
School commences at 8.50am and the pupils are dismissed at 3.00pm. Children should be at school by 8.30am in order tp prepare for the day and the grounds are to be cleared by 3.10pm. The school does not operate a shortened lunchtime system any more.
If students are unwell while at school, they are to report to their teacher before coming to the sickbay. Students are not to contact parents directly, the staff who are responsible for sickbay will do this as and when required.

Stationery may be purchased throughout the year from 8.20 - 8.55am at the office. We ask that parents keep stationery requirements up-to-date throughout the year.
Hard Materials, Electronics, Textile Technology, Food Technology, Art Education, and ICT.
These specialist subjects offer students the opportunity to develop practical skills, manage resources, make decisions and develop self esteem through satisfaction and achievement.
For safety reasons students are to wear shoes to these classes.
A charge will be levied for these subjects to assist with the cost of materials. The fees for 2007 - $80 per child.
Students should wear protective clothing for art and foods.
Students living north of the school may travel by bus - an extension of the Auckland - Papakura and Pukekohe - Auckland Cityline Service has been arranged to include Edinburgh Avenue. These buses arrive at Rosehill Intermediate at 8.30am and depart from school at approximately 3.10pm. Parents are responsible for the payment of bus fares. Contact Cityline Buses (299-8154) for details. Students eligible for transport on Rosehill College buses should make application to the Bus Controller at the College. Ineligible students may be able to purchase passes. For further information contact the Bus Controller at Rosehill College on 296-3980.
Rosehill Intermediate students are expected to wear their uniforms with pride. The full school uniform is set out in the uniform section and should be worn at all times. If for some special reason, e.g. medical, your child is unable to wear the full uniform, a signed note of explanation is expected. Longer term exemptions for non-compliance uniforms will not be issued by staff. Board approval should be sought.
NB Un-named articles are almost impossible to locate - in your own interests, please name all garments and equipment. Losses need to be reported immediately. Please note that the Physical Education uniform is worn for Physical Education lessons and sport. Students on school trips may be allowed to wear PE uniform if the nature of the trip makes this more practical. No students will wear mufti on school trips.
